Writing Is Hard to Do

all-work-and-no-play

I love writing. Correction: I hate that I love to write. For years now, off-and-on, I have attempted to write–something, anything that I can explain from start to finish without sputtering out somewhere in-between. And for years, I have failed to do that. For example, earlier this week, I attempted to write a short story about a couple, a man and woman named Jim and Sally who are having troubles with their relationships both private and professional. This is what I was able to squeeze out so far:

“You’re not listening to me.” Said Sally to Jim. “I am listening to you. I’m just doing something else at the same time.” Jim replied as he began shaving the left side of his head. “I can do two things at once, you know.” Sally shrank inside. “Okay, whatever. So this new girl at my job, she’s really been getting on my nerves.” Sally explained. “She acts like she’s my boss or something, but she’s definitely not my boss, but I don’t know how to tell her that without seeming like I give a damn or whatever.” “Uh-huh. What’s this lady’s name?” Jim asked. “Her name is bitch-ass-hater to me, but I guess her real name is Angela or something like that.” Sally said. Jim stopped shaving and turned to look at Sally standing in the doorway of their cramp bathroom. “What? You don’t know her name?” Jim asked. “I said her name is Angela.” “No, you said that you guess her name is Angela. That’s not the same thing.” Sally rolled her eyes and sighed. “Yes, okay, her name is Angela, okay? Now can I finish my damn story?” Sally snapped back at Jim. “Sure. Sorry, please continue.” Jim said and returned to shaving his head. “So anyway, Angela comes up to me yesterday and tells me that I need to call all of the assistant store managers to see whose planning on attending the quarterly staff meeting next week.” “Okay, but isn’t that part of your job?” Jim asked. “Yeah, but it’s not her job to tell me to do that.” Sally said. “That bitch is cruising for a bruising.” “HA!” Jim laughed out loud. Sally smiled and began laughing along with Jim. “What?” Sally asked. “What’s so damn funny?” “You!—I don’t think I’ve heard you say “cruising for a bruising before.” “I know, it’s something I heard on TV a few days ago. This seemed like an appropriate use of the phrase.” Sally said. Sally would go on to explain that Angela was recently hired as a manager at her store and that several coworkers had already complained to her about Angela’s perceived abuses of power. Sally being the only other store manager, felt like a sponge for the negative sentiments.

Jim stepped out of his car. The heat of the sun enveloped his entire body. 90 degrees and rising he thought to himself. Time to make the donuts. Jim started towards his office building.

And that’s all I got–half-a-page of dialogue that nobody wants to read and its clunky at that. When I read back what I’ve written I always feel dumb. I feel like, I wish I could kill the thing inside of me that compels me to write. Why do I have this urge to write, if I can’t master or even improve the skill? Its one of the more frustrating aspects of my life and it just won’t go away. I suppose I simply need to more practice, but to be honest, I feel like I’ve been practicing my whole life. I’m tired of practicing writing. I want to do writing. For once in my life, I want to finish something.

My Video Submission to gSchool 2013

So today is the last day for submissions to the gSchool program (www.gschool.it) and I finally got off my ass and applied. Little did I understand what would be required to do that. Surprise, surprise they wanted a video. Check me out. (God I hate the sound of my own voice.)

Look to the Skies!!

Cloud (chemical) trails over DC.

As I was walking to work this morning, I looked up to notice several cloud trails in the sky. It seemed funny to see so many trails, but I didn’t think much about it until I found the article titled “Say, It Ain’t Snow” on page 7 of today’s Washington Express. Although I admit, I did not read the entire article, I was surprised to learn that only 19% of the U.S. was covered in snow as of this Thursday–an alarming statistic that is part of a nationwide snow drought.

High altitude jets streaming seeding the skys over DC.

Seeing this story, I thought back to the cloud trails in the sky and something in my mind clicked–cloud seeding! I remembered back to a few years ago to the frenzy of weather related news stories following insane storm season that brought us the likes of Hurricane Katrina. Most of the stories of course focused on the damage and lives lost caused by the storm, others tended to focus on the impact of global warming on weather patterns, but other more “fringe” type stories focused on something completely different–weather manipulation!

For years, the U.S. and other governments have experimented with altering weather patterns using cloud seeding by which they use high altitude planes to release chemicals into the atmosphere with the purpose of inducing rain or snow.

Without a doubt in my mind, this is why the planes were flying over D.C. today in an attempt to create the snow that mother nature has neglected to do. I have no proof of this, but hey, it’s my blog, so whatevs.

Agree? Disagree? Let me know your thoughts.

Amazon stock dips to below $190! Time to make a quick buck?

Oh my! Amazon stocks dropped today below $190 a share. Looks like the announcement by Google that they’re getting into the online music business scared a few AMZN investors, but one investors mistake can be another’s big win. I’m banking that AMZN will bounce back by years end, hopefully reaching $220 a share.

Wish I knew more about what’s going on over at Amazon, but I use their damn products so much, I’m kinda already invested in the success of the company, so…

Fingers, toes, and eyes crossed on this one!

Gall-dang-it! What is up with AdultSwim???

Just realized that AdultSwim.com is now in kahutz with all of the major cable companies!!! (I know, Adult Swim is part of viacom..which is a media company that produces content for cable television. With that said, let me rant for minute.)

I learned this while trying to view back episodes of my new favoritest show “The Heart, She Holler”. What the dang!? In the past, one would only need a flash enabled browser to view video content on AdultSwim.com, but now, when one tries to view a video, they are taken to a screen overlay that asks you what cable service you use for internet. If you do not click on the correct service, your connection to AdultSwim will be severed. If you select the correct service, you will be taken to a login page for your service and upon successfully logging into your account, you will then be redirected to the video which you selected. What the What??

I can understand them wanting to make money off their video content, but that’s what web ads are for, right? So now, if I don’t have cable internet, I can’t view certain content online? Yes, I know, there’s Netflix and other online content services that require paid accounts, but for something that was once for lack of a better word, free, to now be monetized to this point is hard to swaller. But, I suppose I’ll have to swaller it.

So what’s the lesson here kids?..

Monetize your content, because everybody else is…but then again, you can still view some of the videos on YouTube, so..go figure. (No lesson today.)

Blurg.

P.S. Also watch China, IL.

Progressive “Snapshot” Commercial – We Live in Interesting Times

Yesterday, I saw this commercial for the first time. It features a device called “Snapshot“, which when installed in your car will allow Progressive to track things like your driving speed, sudden braking, etc., etc. in real time. In exchange, drivers could receive up to 30% off their car insurance after 1 year of safe driving.

It’s an interesting way to entice safe drivers to switch to progressive, but I have to say that I’m not sure how comfortable I am with my car insurance company knowing where I am at all times and what my driving habits are. We’ve already seen what large companies do with private information, the most recent examples being the phone hacking scandal at News Corp and the hacking of the PS3 network.

I’m sure Progressive has taken the implications of the device into consideration. Only the market will decide if this is the sort of road we’re willing to go down.

2000 and Late: Conan O’Brien Rips on Final Cut X

A week ago I caught this sketch on Conan about the new release of Final Cut Pro X. The sketch is mildly funny, but it’s a little disturbing to hear that seasoned professionals are having trouble working with the program. I myself have only had the pleasure of working with version 6, so I can’t really comment. I hope Apple is listening and gets the bugs out soon…then again, I probably won’t have a chance to upgrade for another few years, so they can take their time.

NYT: Facebook Readies an iPad App, Finally

I’m quickly becoming a fan of tablets and was blown away reading this story from the NYTimes today, Facebook Readies an iPad App, Finally. This is surprising to me because as a mobile device user, I’m finding that more and more, I’m using my devices to access my social media accounts rather than logging in through a workstation or laptop. But I guess the folks at Apple wanted to get things just right before releasing the app, so more power to them.

For me, the most exciting element of the new app would be “The photo and video experience […] offering full resolution and full-screen images.” This is something that I’ve found lacking with the Facebook iPhone app.

Other improvements include an overhaul of the Facebook Chat and Facebook Groups features.

Unfortunately, the story doesn’t say when the app will be released, but I’m sure it will be a hit whenever it gets released!

My Brother’s Graduation!!!

My brother graduated yesterday! Check out the video below. Sorry for the poor quality, not sure why it’s so fuzzy, captured it in HD…
